Go Outdoors

The best way to honor Scott is to spend time outdoors. Scott spent every weekend outside. The weather didn’t impact his plans — a friend recently told me he tried to convince people to rock climb in pouring rain.

Your outdoor adventure doesn’t have to be as extreme as Scott’s. It can be as simple as going for a walk and truly being aware of how amazing nature is.

If you really want to live like Scott, push yourself out of your comfort zone, or take someone along with you. Try an activity you have never done before.

Some of the things Scott loved
  • Hiking
  • Backpacking
  • Mountaineering (extra points if it requires an ice pick)
  • Rock climbing
  • Fly fishing & spin fishing
  • Hunting
  • Archery
  • Canyoneering
  • Camping
  • Snowshoeing
  • Snow camping (build your own igloo or just bundle up)
  • Ice fishing
  • Rafting
  • Kayaking

Make Connections

Scott was the kind of person who instantly became a close friend. He made people feel seen. He made people laugh. He made people feel more alive.

You can do these things, too.

  • Ask how someone’s day or weekend was — and truly listen.
  • Make someone laugh with a story, a joke, or an impersonation.
  • Call someone you don’t talk to often, just to check in.
  • Ask a friend or acquaintance to join you on an outdoor activity. As simple as a walk. As adventurous as taking someone on something they’ve never done before.
